High-achievers? Worrying about what others think? You may have high-functioning anxiety-how to recognise and manage.

High-achievers? Worrying about what others think? You may have high-functioning anxiety-how to recognise and manage.

Do you consider yourself as a high achiever who’s seen as calm, confident and organised on the outside but on the inside you have racing thoughts, look for reassurance from others and worry about what others think of you.

So much so that you make yourself busy and available for almost 24/7 to ensure your team feels supported. When you’ve delivered a project successfully, you feel relieved but worried at the same time wondering if you’ve done a good job.
So understandably, it’s difficult for you to acknowledge your success, let alone celebrate, because you don’t give yourself time to stop and enjoy what you’ve achieved.

You often move on to another project soon after you’ve completed one.
I know you’re thinking about planning ahead all the time because you’re worried about something going wrong that you’ll eventually get ‘found out’ and ‘let go’.

I see that you like to be busy and you believe being busy is a way of proving that you’re worth your job.
At the same time, I also see you wanting to have some headspace, find balance and relax.
But you struggle with racing thoughts that keep you awake at night thinking about things that you could have done better.

I know you’re feeling exhausted with overthinking and worrying.

I want you to know that you can calm your thoughts, find the right balance for you and enjoy your success.

This is what I have recommended to one of my clients and it works and makes a difference to managing her thoughts:
- Give yourself 3 minutes a day and a space where you won’t be disturbed to breathe. This way you shift your attention from your mind to your body. You’ll notice your thoughts are no longer racing.
- Start saying No to the things you don’t want to do - the more you do it the easier it becomes.
- Use a pretend ‘worry’ bowl for any worry, unhelpful thought or other people’s problems - visualise putting these in the bowl - again, this has helped her immensely.

Let me know how this lands for you.
